This is an appreciation post for Baba Marcus Ṣàngódoyin Akinlana, who is not only an O.G. public artist and muralist, but an incredible fine art painter, musician, spiritual leader, martial artist, dancer, and teacher. His live intuitive art channels the soul of music into his work - sometimes drumming AND painting simultaneously on stage! 🪘🎨💥

When I first moved to New Orleans 13 years ago, Philly muralist @gtiberinostudios told me “Find Marcus Akinlana when you get there. He will look out for you”. We first met on the front steps of NOMA and have been friends ever since.
I’m grateful to you, Marcus, for being a mentor to me in so many ways over the years, and glad I can call you soul family.

It was an honor to have Marcus MC and perform for our @peopleforpublicart “Gumbo Botanica” mural unveiling this past spring, especially after he visited with our student muralists to teach them about public art and activism.
